not really. they will help a small amount but they aren’t really that effective

the candles might not help that much, but I buy citronella at the health food store in a little bottle and rubs it on my body. No bug likes that. And it smells really good!

They only work in the direction the smoke blows from the candle , so to answer your question No , they don’t work that well.

Yes citronella candles work, but their effectiveness decreases with the age. “Oil of Citronella is a volatile, liquid oil derived from dried cultivated grasses. It works by repelling animals and insects without harming or killing them. It has a distinctive odour, which repels certain animals.” Thus, the older candles are not effective at all.

Not if you ask my husband. He insists that it attracts them. We have seen mosquito’s fly right up to the flame. They go after him like crazy. He’s such a sweetie! ;)

It only keeps them away from the candle….lol…seriously because it is only effective for the reach of the scent…. a large planting of cironella scented plants around your patio will reduce them but not totally keep them away..your best bet is Deep Woods Off .

“OFF” has a product out that works pretty good. It looks like a lantern it has a tealite candle in it and an “OFF Strip” we set up a few of them on the deck and they work really well. You just buy refills for them. You can get these at Walmart, Home Depot. I found this to be the best.
